Amazon is planning to introduce advertising on its Kindle e-book reader, according to patent applications received in the US.

It is thought Amazon may be looking to increase its readership by offering users a reduced cover price on some books in exchange for advertising appearing within the print. The company also says it is looking to include content-related information such as supplemented reference materials and relevant footnotes, which it believes may be beneficial to consumers.

Amazon recently launched the new widescreen Kindle DX in the US, designed to suit business documents, textbooks and newspapers. It is believed Amazon may look to offer businesses such as newspapers the chance to sell advertising on its e-book reader, as part of further attempts to diversify ad revenues for struggling newspaper firms.

The Kindle has enjoyed huge popularity in the US since its release in November 2007, selling out of its first three models within weeks of their release. However, its global expansion has been less successful, with the launch of the Kindle in Germany delayed after talks between Amazon and the country’s two largest mobile operators broke down.
