Apple is updating its App Store and iBookstore in preparation for the iPad launch on April 3, according to data from media research firm Busted Loop. Apple is said to be creating 20 categories for books on its iBookstore, available to download straight from the iPad. This number is lower than the initial 35 categories Apple said it would include in February.

According to Forbes, which cites the Busted Loop data, the categories include ‘fiction & literature', ‘comics & graphic novels', ‘reference', ‘romance', and ‘cookbooks'. Category sections include more than 150 sub-categories, such as ‘manga' in the comics section. Apple is allowing developers to test iPad compatibility when they update their apps. Currently 16,700 of the 140,000 apps on the App Store have been deemed compatible. Apple is also labelling apps as ‘iPad Wi-Fi' and ‘iPad 3G'. About 40 of the 16,700 certified apps are iPad 3G-only, according to the data. Apple temporarily enabled an ‘explicit' category and says it may include this category in the future, although "it's not going to happen anytime soon," according to AppleInsider, citing an unnamed source.
