Sony is denying claims that a senior executive said a PlayStation branded mobile phone is a likely development, claiming his comments were "misquoted" by the Indian Economic Times (ET). Sony Computer Entertainment co-chief operating officer, Jim Ryan, was quoted by the ET as saying: "The PlayStation is a proven success and so is Sony Ericsson. Convergence with the two arms working together is definitely plausible. It is hugely intellectually seductive to have a console-oriented phone."

Ryan's comments followed earlier statements that a PlayStation branded phone would be a possibility after the success of its Bravia-branded handset in the Japanese market. Sony's CyberShot and Walkman brands have both been incorporated into mobile ranges, offering camera and music playing functions to complement brand success, and a game-focused PlayStation branded phone would be a logical extension.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) responded to suggestions by bloggers and tech analysts that Ryan's comments suggested a PlayStation phone was under development, stating categorically that it was not in negotiation with a Sony branch or service partner to develop such a device, although other co-branded devices are a possibility. Sony is currently working with BT to provide VoIP-based phone, text and video services for the PlayStation Portable device for the European market.
