Loopt partners with Mobile Spinach for location-based ads

Mobile social mapping app Loopt is adding location-based ads to its service through a partnership with coupon firm Mobile Spinach, providing users with nearby offers as well as a map of their friends. Loopt CEO Sam Altman see a lucrative business opportunity. "The market for local advertising is in the billions," he says. "There's no reason we can't get 10% to 20% of that."

Altman says in the future users will also be able to receive ad messages when the app is not running. Loopt is planning to reward users who go to the same places with a digital version of the ‘buy 10 get one free' punch card.
