Samsung has unveiled its long-awaited tablet device, the Galaxy Tab, which is designed to challenge Apple's iPad. The device is powered by Google's Android operating system, has a seven-inch display and offers multi-touch web browsing, supporting both HTML5 and Adobe Flash. It can also be used as a phone, offering voice and video calling, and comes with a camera. It will have a built-in e-book app, called the Readers Hub, which Samsung claims will have more than 2m books, 2,500 magazine and 1,600 newspapers at launch.

"Samsung recognises the tremendous growth potential in this newly created market," says Simon Stanford, head of mobile for Samsung UK. "We believe that the Samsung Galaxy Tab brings a unique and open proposition to the market."

The device is to be released in October in Europe, with a US launch following by the end of the year. Apple has already sold more than 3m iPads since it went on sale in April.
