A revamped version of social news site Digg is set to launch in the coming weeks following Betaworks’ reported USD500,000 acquisition of the firm in July. The new site will have a greater focus on images and will aggregate popular news using Facebook and Twitter as well as user recommended articles. The refreshed Digg will also be ad-free as the firm attempts to turnaround its business following a torrid few years. The redesign is part of Betaworks’ ‘rethink Digg’ project designed to reengage the service’s once-passionate user base.
Betaworks snapped up Digg for just a fraction of the USD175m it was once worth following two years of falling user numbers and relevance following a disastrous revamp in 2010. However, subsequent reports claim that Digg received USD16m by selling off its assets, including patents and staff, in the weeks leading up to the Betaworks deal.
