About 60% of apps on the Android Market are free to download, up from 57% in May, according to research by analytics firm Distimo in July. Android has roughly double the proportion of free apps compared with Palm's App Catalogue (31%), the iPhone (29%) and the iPad and the Blackberry (26%). Windows Mobile has the lowest proportion of free apps at 22%.
The research reveals that the average price of the 100 most popular apps is nearly three times higher for the iPad than for the iPhone. More than 60% of apps are USD2 or less for the iPhone and Android, but this figure is less than 50% for the iPad. The proportion of apps under USD1 on the Apple App Store decreased in July 2010, from 30% to 25% on the iPad and from 49% to 45% on the iPhone.
