Intel is releasing a netbook apps store designed to cater to netbooks' unique screen size and mobility. Intel CEO Paul Otellini made the announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The store will be called Intel AppUp Center and will run on Windows.
The first set of apps are already available for download, either free or to purchase, with more being added as they are validated. App categories include entertainment, business, education, games, health and social media. Acer, Asus, Dell and Samsung will collaborate on their own app stores with Intel.
App developers will gain huge revenue opportunities from the hundreds of millions of computers and devices that are based on Intel processors. Intel hopes to move towards home electronics and lessen the company's dependence on personal computers, which make up about 90% of sales.
Home electronics products will include a set-top box with Intel chips, which Otellini demonstrated at the Consumer Electronics Show. This allows users to view multiple live programmes simultaneously, instead of resorting to the traditional text programme-guide. This product will be available with Orange in France.
