Google and Yahoo! and others are teaming up with pharmaceutical companies to demand US government regulators make it easier and sell drugs online. The companies will approach the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) specifically to appeal for more relaxed regulation pertaining to listing side effects. At present ads for pharmaceuticals in the US must include a detailed list of side effects, which cannot fit into a two-line text ad.
Last year, drug companies spent USD4.3bn on ads but online marketing only accounted for 3% of this sum, which means web companies have also missed an opportunity to bolster ad revenues with online drug ads.
