Apple patent hints at tablet with stylus

A patent filed by Apple hints that the long-rumoured tablet device expected to debut early next year may be designed to work with a stylus. The patent describes a device for receiving “ink information entered at a pen-based input/display device”.

However, in the many rumours about an Apple tablet to emerge in recent months, there has been little mention of any separate input device. Some commentators say Apple is unlikely to adopt such a design, which was a feature of its failed Newton tablet. It is possible the patent may be for another device completely, or even an example of the misdirection Apple is famous for. Apple may also be moving to stop other firms developing such a device, a common practice in the tech industry.
