Russia’s largest mobile operator Mobile Telesystems (MTS) has announced plans to spend up to USD1.6bn on a nationwide 3G network, and to roll out 3G services in former Soviet states Uzbekistan, Armenia and Belorus. MTS switched on its first 3G/HSPA network in St Petersburg on Wednesday, and will roll out the service commercially across the cities of Sochi, Yekaterinburg and Kazan in the near future. Eventually, MTS is planning 3G networks in more than 10 cities this year, increasing to more than 40 cities across Russia by 2009. In ancillary MTS territories Armenia and Uzbekistan, 3G is scheduled to launch as early as 2009.
