Some 22% of the US population doesn't use the internet, with the majority of those remaining offline falling into an older demographic. The stats from the Pew Research Center indicate that American internet usage patterns are shifting, with smartphones and social networks being more of a factor than traditional dividing lines such as gender or race. The ubiquity of smartphones and sites such as Twitter or Facebook among the young means that they are considerably more likely to be connected than older generations, although Pew does note a considerable uptake among so-called "silver surfers". Some 41% of those over 65 use the internet, versus just 12% in 2000.
