BT's departing CEO, Ben Verwaayen, is slamming customers who ask for paper invoices instead of using electronic direct debits, says The Telegraph. "I find it amazing that people are opposed to have a paperless bill," Verwaayen says. "If you want to have a paper bill, you'd better pay for it. You are paying for pollution. Get used to it."
Since last year, BT charges customers who receive paper bills and insist on paying via cash or cheque instead of electronically. The move drew numerous complaints and a client even sued BT, although the court ruled in the telco's favour.
Verwaayen, who is due to step down on May 31, even suggests that consumers should be rewarded for using paperless billing methods. The executive is chairman of the Confederation of British Industry’s Climate Change Taskforce and plans to tour the nation as a climate change lecturer.
BT says more than 1m subscribers have selected paperless billing, a number that it expects to grow.
