The UK Government is issuing a new 20-page guide urging ministers and civil servants to use Twitter. The guide, which includes information on how to use the micro-blogging platform, is aimed at increasing the visibility of government news and messages online.
The guide suggests that ministers should tweet at least twice but not more than 10 times a day, with at least a 30-minute break between messages. The guide’s author is Neil Williams, head of corporate digital channels at the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills. “This should require less than an hour a day of working time,” he says.
About 19 government departments, including the Foreign Office and Downing Street, already run official Twitter feeds.
Williams says: “You might think a 20-page strategy a bit over the top for a tool like Twitter but I was surprised by just how much there is to say.”
