The majority of US consumers between the ages of 18 and 34 would prefer a netbook rather than Apple's iPad, according to an NPD survey. Some 51% of this key demographic would choose a netbook, while 44% of Apple product owners would prefer a more functional computer such as a MacBook.

Around 27% of the 18-to-34 demographic say they are very interested in owning an iPad. But consumers are put off by the high prices of the iPad, with 57% of 18 to 34-year-olds reporting that the cost of the device is the number reason they are not ready to buy the device. In contrast, 43% of Apple product owners surveyed believe the pricing is too expensive.

When asked if they would purchase an iPad in the next six months, 9% of all respondents said they were "extremely likely" or "very likely" to do so. However, the proportion of users who were "not very likely" or "not likely at all" to buy an iPad within six months was much greater. Some 66% of the consumers surveyed say they are "not very likely" or "not likely at all" to buy the device in the next six months.
