The launch of Wikipedia in 2001, the iPhone's 2007 debut, and the 2008 US Presidential campaign, are among the ten most influential internet moments of the decade, according to organisers of this year's Webby Awards.
Twitter's 2006 launch was noted as a vital moment, alongside Facebook becoming available outside of universities. Social media's increasing political relevance was also recognised, with Twitter praised for its help in spreading reports of demonstrations and protests during Iran's contested elections earlier this year.
The executive director of the Webby Awards says the internet has become increasingly important over the last ten years, because of its capacity to act as a "catalyst for change".
