UK regulator won't oppose Google monopoly

The UK’s Office of Fair Trading (OFT) does not oppose Google's stronghold of the UK search market and says the firm’s dominant 90% market share poses no threat to consumers. OFT chief John Fingleton notes the complaints of Google’s competitors, but says the OFT is cautious to challenge a business that has achieved a monopoly through "superior innovation".

Fingleton claims Google is good for consumers and the economy: "We see a lot of customers benefit from what's happening in this marketplace from very high innovation - it's good for the British economy".

The news is unlikely to appease Google critics such as News Corp, which is threatening to boycott the search engine. Microsoft's Bing search engine is reportedly considering paying publishers to delist from Google.
