Total wagers placed on mobile handsets will exceed USD48bn a year by 2015 as mobile casino, lottery and betting services launch in emerging markets such as China, according to Juniper Research. This figure is up from just USD3.6bn last year and will be driven by increasing mobile penetration and the convenience of mobile platforms, which enable gamblers to access services privately at any time. Growth in the market will also be spurred by changes to gambling laws that make it easier to place bets via mobile devices.

"Online and mobile gambling is advantageous in that it attracts the more casual gambler," says the report. "Online casinos and bookmakers alike are seeking to exploit the rise in consumer smartphone adoption by developing apps geared for the platform."

Japan Racing Association's iPat service has previously been responsible for the "bulk" of global mobile gambling transactions. Casino and betting services in the UK account for the majority of the rest of the market. However, the launch of mobile lottery service VODone will propel China to third place by 2015 in terms of mobile gambling transactions, says the report. The US is also set to see an increase in mobile gambling as state lotteries introduce mobile services to offset declining sales from traditional outlets.
