Smartphone apps, made popular by the Apple iPhone, will continue to remain widely used despite advances in mobile web technology, according to AdMob's VP of global alliances Russell Buckley.
Speaking at the FT Digital Media and Broadcasting Conference in London, Buckley said: "I think from a technology point of view, a lot of people think that apps are going to go away quite quickly, because it bridges where we are technology-wise and where we want to be. But I think apps are going to be around for a long time actually, and it's because people like to own stuff. Our brains don't understand the idea of renting services."
The exec added: "On our ad inventory, a big proportion of our ads are app-based". AdMob, which specialises in mobile apps, was bought by Google in November for a reported USD750m. As of December, Google's Android app store contained more than 20,000 apps.
