The number of people who watch online video through their TV has tripled over the last year, according to online video platform Sidereel. The firm claims that 40% of its users watched online via an internet-connected TV or other web-connected device in December. Netflix is the most popular application for watching online video on a TV, with 70% of people using the video streaming service. Rival service Hulu, which launched its online TV app Hulu Plus in November, is used by 4% of viewers.
About 60% of respondents said that rather than using an IPTV set-top box, they have connected their computers to a TV screen. Sidereel says more than half of its users watch five to 20 hours of online video per week.
