The Wikimedia Foundation is aiming to raise USD7.5m in its annual fundraising campaign to help pay its small staff and maintain Wikipedia’s technological infrastructure. The money will also support the worldwide network of volunteers who provide the free information on Wikipedia. Last year the Foundation raised USD6.9m.

Wikipedia is ad-free, and founder Jimmy Wales says advertising would not fit with the site’s “free culture ethos”. Wales recently teamed up with Hewlett Packard to encourage users to publish their own printed magazines.
