Motorola is dismissing another 74 employees from its mobile phone division based in Libertyville, Illinois. This follows the company's decision to lay off 3,000 members of staff earlier in the year, 500 of whom were based in Libertyville.
Motorola is hoping that the release of its new handsets running Google’s Android operating system during the fourth quarter will aid the company's recovery. However, CEO of the company’s mobile unit, Sanjay Jha, admits that Motorola may be forced to sell the division if the economy does not pick up.
Motorola is failing to keep up with competition from smartphones such as the iPhone, the new Palm Pre and BlackBerry devices. Its last successful handset was the Razr, which is now considered a low-end phone.
