Apple devices gain acceptance by businesses

Businesses are activating more devices running Apple's iOS operating system than devices running Google's Android, Microsoft's Windows Mobile or Nokia's Symbian, according to technology management company Good Technology. But although the results are encouraging for Apple, the study excludes Research In Motion (RIM)'s BlackBerry devices, which are traditionally the most popular smartphones for businesses. The report does not include RIM activations because RIM offers its own BlackBerry Enterprise Server, meaning its customers don't need the services offered by Good.

iOS devices represented more than 50% of new activations in Good’s study in the three months ending in September. Android accounted for nearly 30% of new activations while Windows Mobile devices comprised 15%. Among individual devices, the iPhone 4 is now the most activated device on Good's servers followed by the iPhone 3GS and the iPad. The most popular non-Apple devices are Motorola's Droid X, which runs on Android, and the HTC Cedar, which is a Windows Mobile device.

Good provides management and security tools that allow companies to deploy smartphones. Its figures don't include total numbers, meaning it is impossible to make a comparison between the popularity of iOS and BlackBerry platforms in the enterprise market. Nevertheless, Good's figures hint at the growing acceptance of Apple and Android phones in the enterprise space. A recent Bloomberg report said that top banks, including JPMorgan, are now supporting iPhone and Android devices alongside BlackBerrys, while Good claims that its clients now include 40 of the Fortune 100.
