Downloads of the Opera browser have more than doubled since Microsoft was forced to give European users a choice of internet software, according to figures released by the company. To settle EU antitrust charges, Microsoft started sending updates to Windows computers in early March which launched a screen offering users a range of 12 browsers to install. Previously Microsoft's Internet Explorer was the default browser on all PCs running its operating system. Opera says downloads have grown 130% across Europe, with the highest increase of 328% seen in Poland.
