PayPal testing mobile payments with McDonald’s

PayPal is testing a mobile payments deal with McDonald’s that will let customers place orders using the fast-food chain’s smartphone app and pay for their food and drinks using PayPal. The pilot follows a test in Orlando earlier this year and is currently running in 30 of McDonald’s French restaurant outlets, with the firm saying the technology could be available “within the next 24 months or so”. PayPal already has similar deals with 15 major retailers including Home Depot and Toys R Us, but sealing a partnership with McDonald’s, which has more than 30,000 stores worldwide, would be a major coup for the firm. The move comes shortly after Square joined forces with Starbucks to power payments in store, as mobile payment firms increasingly compete for merchant partnerships.
