More than half of the UK now owns a smartphone, according to new research from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, indicating that the country has reached a tipping point in smartphone adoption. The research firm claims that 71.4% of all mobile sales for the three months ending January 22were smartphones, boosting ownership in the country past the 50% mark for the first time. Android continues to lead UK adoption, accounting for a shade less than half of all smartphones, though Apple is gaining, with its share jumping 34.1% year on year to reach 29.1% of the market. The stats mark a shift in the UK, which is ahead of its rivals France, Germany, Japan and the US in terms of smartphone penetration, according to a separate study by Ipsos Mori.
