Google is adding a check-in feature to its Latitude app, allows users to find contacts and share their locations, in what is being seen as a tentative move into the territory dominated by services such as Foursquare. The update includes a ‘Latitude Leaderboard', where users are ranked by the number of points they are rewarded for checking into certain locations, as Google moves to boost interaction with the service. The firm is also linking Latitude to Google+, prompting new Latitude users to sign in through the social network, as well as allowing users to share locations and check-ins with their friends, in a bid to leverage higher engagement. Although the check-in market is still in its infancy, the marriage of location, social and mobile, as well as the option to add daily deals and rewards schemes, is becoming an increasingly effective combination.
