Some nine out of 10 US internet users visited a social network at least once a month in 2011, according to new research from comScore, as sites such as Facebook cement their position as gateways to the internet. The research firm’s ‘2012 US Digital Future in Focus’ report adds that social networks now account for a sixth of users’ time spent online, a stat that is likely to encourage advertisers to dedicate more of their budgets to social platforms. Facebook accounted the majority of minutes, according to comScore, with engagement hitting an average of seven hours per user in December. Overall, Facebook accounts for 15% of all the time Americans spend online, according to comScore.
