‘App economy' brings 466,000 jobs to US

Wed Feb 8 2012, 11:49 AM

The US 'app economy' brought an estimated 466,000 jobs to the country over the last five years, according to a new TechNet report authored by economist Michael Mandel. The estimate, described by Mandel as "conservative", assumes one new peripheral job created for every two within app companies, due to increased spending power and business activity in the area. Roughly half of the direct app jobs call for programmers or developers, and half for support staff in areas including sales, marketing, operations and HR. "The app economy is the construction sector of the twenty-first century," says Mandel. "Every major consumer-facing company, and many business-facing companies, has discovered that they need an app to be the public face of the business."
