Amazon is partnering with media network Viacom in a move that will boost its US Prime Instant Video catalogue with programming from networks including MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon. Prime Instant Video offers unlimited streaming to smart TVs, computers or Kindles free with the USD79 Prime 'free shipping' annual subscription. The Viacom deal - which follows 2011 licensing arrangements with broadcasters including Disney, CBS and Fox - is fuelling rumours that Amazon is strengthening the service in order to spin it off as a Netflix competitor.
