Verizon is teaming up with DVD firm Redbox to launch a video streaming and film rental service in the US later this year. The service, which will also be available to non-Verizon customers, will pitch Verizon and Redbox parent firm Coinstar into direct competition with Netflix, which currently dominates in the US and has recently expanded to the UK. According to Associated Press sources, the firms are considering a USD6 per month subscription fee for unlimited streaming on certain titles and one DVD rental per month. While an aggressive pricing strategy is likely to boost interest in the new service, the size and breadth of Netflix's film catalogue is likely to dwarf the selection on offer in what is already an over-crowded market.
