Revenues from mobile apps will hit more than USD50bn in 2016, according to a new report from Juniper Research, fuelled by accelerating smartphone adoption and the emergence of tablets such as Apple's iPad into the mass market. Operator billing, which allows consumers to pay for apps in Google's Android Market or Nokia's Ovi Store as part of their monthly bill will have a "dramatic" impact on revenues, according to Juniper. Although smartphone apps will continue to represent the majority of mobile app revenues over the next five years, tablet apps will grow from 7% of global revenues to accounting for a quarter by 2016.
