Smartphone shipments overtook PCs for the first time in 2011, rocketing 63% between 2010 and 2011 to hit 487.7m units, according to data from Canalys, as devices such as Apple's iPhone start to rival the functionality of desktop devices. The overall PC market, which includes notebooks, netbooks, tablets and traditional desktops, grew 15% at less than a third of the speed of smartphones, with shipments up from 120.2m to 414.6m in 2011. This tipping point should be seen as a "significant milestone" according to analyst Chris Jones, who argues that the devices have now transitioned from "niche" devices to the mass market. Consumers are increasingly turning to smartphones and tablets to perform tasks traditionally performed on PCs, such as emailing, social networking, shopping and browsing.
