Apple’s iPhone is the top-selling US smartphone, surpassing models from both Samsung and LG in Q4 2011 to take 43% of the market, according to new data from NPD Group. Demand for new features including Siri voice assistant on the iPhone 4S, which launched in the quarter, as well as the addition of Sprint as a carrier in the country powered growth, says the report. The figures indicate that Apple is narrowing the gap on Google's Android operating system, which accounted for 48% of overall smartphone sales during the quarter. Now accounting for over 90% of smartphone sales, however, the duopoly between Android and iOS is likely to continue dominating the market in the year ahead, making it harder for rivals such as Microsoft's Windows Phone and RIM's BlackBerry smartphones to get a foothold in the space.
