Facebook accounted for a fifth of all web page views and 9% of visits online in the US in January, according to a new report from Experian Hitwise, highlighting soaring levels of engagement as the social network prepares for its long-anticipated IPO. The figures show that the average Facebook user spends 20 minutes per visit on the site and that members are highly loyal to the site, with 96% of visitors to Facebook.com returning visitors. The report suggests that Facebook's moves to boost engagement for both consumers and brands, including recent overhauls of its profile pages and news ticker, are paying off as users spend longer and longer on the site. However, a separate report from Pew Internet Research suggests that this data could be skewed by a small number of ‘power users', with the majority of activity coming from between 20% and 30% of its global users base.
