Apple accounts for three quarters of global mobile phone profits despite controlling just 9% of the market in terms of units shipped, according to the latest stats from Asymco analyst Horace Dediu, illustrating the iPhone manufacturer’s continuing dominance worldwide. Apple’s high profit margins enabled it to snare such a significant portion of the profits during Q4 2011, despite the iPhone being its only mobile on sale, compared to its rivals which have extensive product portfolios. Apple’s share of shipments has grown nearly three times from 3% in Q2 2010, with its share of the mobile spoils almost doubling from 39% during the same period. Samsung is the closest firm behind Apple, snaring 16%, meaning the duo combined control more than 90% of global profits.
