Twitter creator defends individual tweet censorship

Thu Feb 2 2012, 15:11 PM

Twitter’s executive chairman Jack Dorsey is defending the microblogging platform’s decision to censor individual tweets in certain countries, saying that it means that the site censors less overall, because the only alternative would be “global” censorship of the entire site in certain countries. He adds that individual censorship also helps Twitter to be transparent when individual tweets have been hidden. Hiding individual Tweets also draws attention to countries or governments in which freedom of speech is limited. He made his comments at TechCrunch’s Crunchies Awards.
