Spotify now claims 3m paying subscribers worldwide, accounting for a fifth of the music-streaming service’s total user base. Spotify’s chief content office, Ken Parks, announced the figure at an event at the firm’s London HQ, with the move going some way to placate critics of its freemium business model. The firm has added half a million new subscribers in just less than two months, with the numbers highlighting Spotify’s strong growth following its US expansion and tie-up with social network Facebook. The increase is another positive for the firm as it strives to become the top streaming service worldwide, ahead of firms that offer purely subscription-based products.
