Strong smartphone sales help Samsung record a KRW4 trillion (USD3.56bn) profit for its latest quarter, offsetting a drop in its display panel division. The 17% year-on-year profit rise comes as the South Korean firm records KRW47.3 trillion (USD42.2bn) in revenue for the quarter ending December, but Strategy Analytics believes that it narrowly missed Apple’s 37m iPhone sales during the three month period, pegging Samsung’s quarterly sales at 36.5m. Samsung is not disclosing sales of its tablet lineup, leading some to believe that sales could be poorer-than-expected as it fails to challenge Apple's iPad at the high-end of the market. Full-year profits fell 15% to KRW13.7 trillion (USD12.2bn), with 2011 revenue coming in at KRW165 trillion (USD147.1bn).
