Google spent a total of USD1.98bn on closing 79 acquisitions in 2011, with more expensive purchases including its USD676m deal for ITA Software, according to a regulatory filing. The figure does not include Google's USD12.5bn acquisition of Motorola Mobility, which is still pending approval from regulators. Although Google's chairman Eric Schmidt previously revealed that the search giant was acquiring smaller firms at a rate of one a week, the figures demonstrate Google is gobbling up companies at a much faster pace. The firm seems unlikely to pause and take breath, stating: "Acquisitions will also remain an important component of our strategy and use of capital, and we expect our current pace of acquisitions to continue."
