Google and Facebook are urging Lord Justice Leveson to distinguish between information publishers and online content facilitators such as social networks and search engines, as he investigates the future of UK press regulation. Leveson says the clash between print and online media is "one of the great issues" faced by his enquiry into privacy in the media, after talking with representatives of Google, Facebook and celebrity gossip site Popbitch. After Facebook's head of UK public policy, former MP Lord Allan, compared Facebook's content to "gossip in pubs", Leveson agreed with a distinction between social media and "organisations that are in the business of selling [...] news or information. Meanwhile Popbitch co-founder Camilla Wright claimed that although her site issues weekly editorial content, it is a "two-way conversation" due to emphasis on comments.
