Apple's smartphone shipments overtook Samsung in Q4 last year, with demand for the iPhone 4S boosting sales to 37m and giving the firm a 23.9% market share, according to a new report from StrategyAnalytics. Apple just eclipsed Samsung, which accounted for 23.5% of the market and shipped 36.5m devices in the period. However, looking at 2011 overall, Samsung wins out with 97.4m units shipped, compared to Apple's 93m. With only a few million units between them, the smartphone market is fast becoming a two-horse race between the rivals, with Nokia trailing at some distance with just 19.6m shipments and 12.6% of the market as the firm struggles to adapt to the fast-moving smartphone market. The findings are underpinned by data from IHS, pegging Samsung sales slightly lower at 36m, with both research houses agreeing that the smartphone market will be dominated by Apple and Samsung for the next few quarters.
