HP begins releasing webOS as open-source platform

Thu Jan 26 2012, 14:35 PM

Hewlett-Packard is taking steps toward making its webOS mobile operating system free to any programmer who wants to use it. HP says it is creating a program for writing apps that can run on different devices, Enyo, available immediately, with webOS itself following by the end of September. Between now and then, HP hopes to hit certain development milestones to enhance webOS throughout the year until its release, and says it will make a substantial investment in the technology, which has been critically praised but commercially unsuccessful so far. Individual elements of the webOS source code, including core applications like mail, calendar and its Linux kernel, will be released in the coming months, before the full code base goes open-source later in the year.
