The US mobile ad market is growing faster than expected, with spend nearly doubling year on year to hit USD1.45bn in 2011, according to the latest stats from eMarketer. The research firm attributes much of the growth, up 89% from USD769.6m in 2010, to Google’s mobile search ad division, as well as advertisers’ softening stance towards the format as they begin to spend on display ads on smartphones and tablets. The strong increases are expected to continue this year, with eMarketer revising up its forecast for US mobile ad spend to USD2.61bn from the USD1.8bn it previously predicted and an increase of 80% year on year. The stats will act as a shot in the arm to the mobile ad industry, which was the subject of some less-than-enthusiastic forecasts last year.
