Google is risking a consumer backlash over changes to its privacy policy that will enable the firm to gather and share information about its users across its properties including Gmail and YouTube. Google says that the changes, outlined in a blog post, are designed to create an “intuitive interface” across its products, but some commentators claim the move is designed to stockpile personal data in order to better compete with Facebook for advertisers’ attention. The move will re-ignite debate regarding the treatment of sensitive consumer information online by large internet firms.
