Barnes and Noble (B&N) is offering its Nook e-readers to customers for free in a bid to boost sales of digital newspapers and magazines. Readers that buy an annual subscription to the Nook edition of The New York Times or People magazine will receive a Nook e-reader for free, as the firm attempts to generate interest in its digital publishing products. B&N's strategy imitates that of Amazon, which is prepared to take a hit on hardware sales in order to drive up content sales. Amazon reportedly makes a loss of USD5 on every Kindle Fire tablet it sells.
