Apple's share of the US smartphone market doubled in 2011 to hit 44.9%, with booming demand for the latest iPhone model helping Apple outsell all devices running on Google's Android operating system in Q4, according to research from Kantar Worldpanel. The figures show Android's share slipping from 50% in Q4 2010 to 44.8% a year later and highlight the stranglehold that Apple and Google hold over the US smartphone space, with the two firms accounting for almost 90% of the market. Kantar's report comes as Apple posts record earnings, with profits of USD13.06bn far outpacing analyst expectations and topping Google's entire revenues in the same period. iPhone sales increased 128% year on year in Q4 to hit 37m units, with analysts forecasting that the firm will sustain this momentum over the next year, potentially widening this lead.
