Social networks unite against Google search changes

Facebook, Twitter and MySpace are uniting against Google's ‘personalised' search service, accusing the firm of unfairly favouring results from its own Google+ network. A group of engineers representing each of the major social networks has developed a toolbar app that displays Google search results without the effects of the changes, which Google says are designed to make search more social. Dubbed ‘Don't be evil', in a jibe at Google's own company mantra, the add-on marks the latest dispute between Google and its competitors over its search practices, after Twitter spoke out against the changes last week. The debate comes at a time where consumers increasingly turn to social networks as sources of information and news, raising questions over the relevance of search results that don't include social data.
