The number of tablet owners in the US nearly doubled between mid-December to early January, rising from 10% to 19% of the population, according to new statistics from Pew Internet. This coincides with a jump in e-reader ownership, which grew at the same pace to also reach 19% penetration. The surge is attributable to the gift-giving season and suggests that tablets are making further inroads into the mass market following the launch of Apple's second-generation tablet, as well as a range of competing devices.
