Google could make USD5.8bn from mobile ads in 2012

Brokerage firm Cowen is projecting that Google will earn USD5.8bn from mobile advertising this year, as the number of internet-connected mobile devices continues to rise. In an attempt to analyse Google's revenue for the free, open-source Android software, Cowen's Jim Friedman claims the projected jump from 509m activated devices worldwide in 2011 to 914m in 2012 will more than double Google's mobile ad revenue. Friedman put together Google's October USD2.5bn revenue figure for search and display mobile ads, and CEO Larry Page's recent claim that display ads across all sources earn the company USD5bn per year. With these figures, he estimates USD7 in yearly revenue from each smartphone and tablet worldwide (including those using iOS and other devices to log onto the Google search engine). Google's advertising push should add another dollar onto that figure this year, making a total of USD5.8bn in mobile ads.
